We are farmers... bumbubumbumbumbumbumbum
Hello people of blog land... well Im back with some more wild life updates. Some fun, some not so fun. Last week I had the chance to head up to Rexburg, Idaho and participate in the famous "spud harvest" !! It was unlike anything I was expecting. If I'm being honest my old school brain was thinking everyone would be in the fields with shovels and digging up each individual potato plant (over thousands of acres). Yah no. not exactly. Guys it was epic. These farmers have this process down! Im talking harvesting 25,000 pounds of potatoes in less than 5 minutes. So anyways... before I get ahead of myself... I had lab before heading up to Idaho...
Oof I forgot - I bought me some hokas. I love them. Lets just say Ive ran three straight days now! eek!
Look how pretty!! ft. josh's truck "big blue"
So I pull up and hop in the truck with Josh's mom. We head out to the field where I hop in with Joshua. So the process is driving these big honking trucks out to the fields where the crossovers are digging up 14 (I think) rows of potatoes at a time and dumping them into these trucks. You wait in line for your turn to load your truck and once you're loaded you drive to the cellar where you back the truck in to this conveyer belt thing. You hop out of the truck and help sort the potatoes as they are coming out of the truck and getting piled into the cellars. I actually loved sorting the potatoes and finding the dirt clumps, rotten potatoes etc. Felt like a competition to see who could get the biggest dirt claud or the most rotten potato. All fun and games until it was 2 am and freezing though haha.
Joshua took me on a field trip deep into one of the cellars where we climbed the hill of potatoes and saw this...
SO MANY POTATOES
Please notice I am in two jackets and he has a t-shirt on. These Idaho people are a different breed I swear. The first night of harvest I think we stayed up till about 2:30am. Josh's uncle is the head honcho over the farm and he was up against the weather. Its crazy to learn how efficient everything is and how really every minute counts. I mean If you can harvest 25,000 pounds of potatoes in around 3 minutes that proves... every minute counts! We slept in the next morning. I got to hang with hannah and her girls (josh's sister and nieces) while the others headed out to the fields. We went on a run/walk and baked goodies all morning. Homemade fruit leathers, cinnamon twists and tomato soup!! Around dinner time we gave Josh and suzette some food and hopped in the trucks with them.
Wednesday was the last day of harvest. This picture was taken at 2:30am technically thursday morning. The rain was supposed to be coming in around 3-4am so we were up against the clock. Im weak and I accidentally fell asleep in the truck for about 45 minutes. I don't know how Josh and his fam had been doing this the last two weeks... I was exhausted after two half days! The harvest was successful - We finished and cleaned up by about 3:30am. We definitely woke up to rain so really finished right in time. Super cool to see the process of where my mcdonalds french fries come from and how hard people work to get them there.
Thursday we slept in some more (who wouldn't though when you don't get to bed till 4:30am), family breakfast and then we headed to the mountains. Sadly it was a cloudy, rainy day so I didnt even really get to see the tetons :,( but we had a good time hiking alaska basin. So so pretty as you can see. We drove around some cute small towns around eastern Idaho then came home to hottub and relax! Friday was a lazy morning and then headed back to Provo.
My roommates were pumped to see me and I was pumped to see them. It was a fun girls night after not all being together for a while. Dont ask me why we were all dressed up weird but we made a funny dancing video, ate dinner together and watched a movie. Man, I love them.
But really, this week hasn't been the easiest and I cant even explain how grateful I am for these girls. So i guess this is where I can mention - josh and I decided to break up on sunday. It was not fun or an easy decision, but through fasting, prayer and a lot of discussion we decided its what was best for right now. There were just a few things that weren't aligning in our futures and we needed to put some space in between us to figure things out. It sucks and I still love him so dang much which just makes things even more confusing, but for now Im just trying to keep myself busy and hope that he's doing ok. I usually leave this kind of talk for my journal, but I figured I needed to document it at least a little on here. So yah, I don't know what I would've done without my friends this week. I came home sunday and walked straight to my room. Shawnee followed me to my room and the minute she saw my eyes just hugged me and cried with me. I thought I wanted to be alone, but it was such a blessing to have my best friend there for me. Sheesh in such a crappy time I felt so dang loved. I have the best roommates ever.
Ashley spent monday with me and we did some damage... retail therapy style. Like I said.. best roommates. We spent the day shopping and it was honestly so fun. I don't know if this makes us super good shopping buddies or awful shopping buddies but I swear anything we tried on we just hyped each other up and we bought way too much but oh well. Another thing that I started on monday was running! I woke up monday morning and couldn't stand to just lay in bed any longer drowning in my thoughts so I got up and drove to rock canyon. I was hoping to run a little but wasnt expecting much. WELL I ran about six 30 second hill repeats and it felt so good. I then just walked down and hiked along this trail for awhile. I did the same thing Tuesday and Wednesday! Wednesday morning shawnee came with me and we did 8 repeats that were longer and faster. Holy smokes it feels good to get my heart rate up again.
Im hoping the weather allows me a few more weeks of running this canyon without snow. I love that I feel like Im getting a workout in again, but also I love that Im doing it outside. Ive missed getting outside in the mornings for exercise. gyms are cool, but I actually really don't like them... I just have to because that's all Ive been able to do the last two years! Very grateful for even being able to run 45 seconds at a time. Progress!!
Last but not least a simple, random picture of our late night floor talks. I just had to snap a picture to document these easy nights of us in our pjs, sitting on the kitchen floor talking about anything from STD's to raising children and from first kisses to spiritual experiences. I always say on here that life is good. Well this week life sucked, but there is still so much good in life too. Oh and updates on school... IDK to be honest I've been so distracted I haven't even looked at my planner or anything related to school in days. I do know I have a midterm next week though so I should probably look into that :) Hope everyone is doing well.
